The 2018 Candidate Forum

We would like to invite everyone out to our 2018 Candidate Forum on April 13th at the Powell County High School in the Cafeteria. The event will start broadcasting at 7:00, but come early to meet some of the candidates that plan on speaking that night.

We have over 30 candidates that have confirmed to speak at the event, with even more on-hand to answer any question you may have. In addition to our Democratic Party candidates, we will also be allowing any candidate running for a non-partisan office to speak. We believe it’s important to let the people hear from the Judicial candidates, which typically are non-partisan races, so that the voters can be well-informed on what is going on with our courts, as well as programs sponsored by the courts.

We will be broadcasting the event on 104.9 WSKV, as well as our Facebook page. We will make the broadcast available after the event on our Facebook page and YouTube channel.

Candidate Information

Each candidate will have a certain amount of time to speak directly to those in the audience. We encourage each candidate to stay positive and to adhere to the time limits. Those time limits are:

  • Regional Candidates – 7 minutes
  • County-wide Candidates – 5 minutes
  • Precinct & District Candidates – 2 minutes

The speaking order is determined by the scope of the race, the last name of the candidate, and whether or not they’re an incumbent. This means that candidates will speak in alphabetical order by their last name, with the incumbent for that position going last. We will start with Regional candidates, take a brief intermission, move to County-wide candidates, take a final intermission, then conclude with the Precinct & District candidates. The order of the races are:

  • U.S. House of Representatives – 6th Congressional District
  • Kentucky House of Representatives – 74th District
  • Commonwealth Attorney
  • Judge of the Court of Appeals – 7th District/ 2nd Division (Non-Partisan)
  • District Judge (Non-Partisan)

——– INTERMISSION ——–

  • Judge Executive
  • Sheriff
  • Property Valuation Administrator
  • Jailer
  • Coroner
  • Circuit Clerk
  • County Clerk
  • County Attorney
  • County Surveyor

——– INTERMISSION ——–

  • Magistrate – District #1
  • Magistrate – District #2
  • Magistrate – District #3
  • Magistrate – District #4
  • Magistrate – District #5
  • Constable – District #1
  • Constable – District #3
  • Constable – District #4

The format will be a single podium that focuses all the attention on the currently speaking candidate. It is not a Town Hall or Q&A event. If you have questions, we encourage you to ask the candidates directly in the time before or after the broadcast, or during one of the intermissions.

We ask that candidates check-in with the greeters at the door when they arrive. They’ll have the opportunity to provide any special instructions, or to get any last-minute information about the event at that time. If you fail to check-in, we may skip over your speaking spot since we won’t know you’ve arrived. We would like candidates to show up at 6:00 to give those constituents who wish to engage directly time to be heard before the broadcast starts at 7:00.
